Non-residential funding in Canada sees decline for third consecutive month

The business, industrial and institutional elements of non-residential constructing development all fell to the bottom ranges seen since April 2020. Ontario (-9.5% to $1.8 billion) and Quebec (-15.2% to $1.0 billion) accounted for almost all of the provincial declines in all three non-residential elements. 

Funding in business constructing development was down 11.3% to $2.6 billion in September. Newfoundland and Labrador (+0.4%) was the one province to report a rise. 

Funding in industrial constructing development fell 5.6%, with each province reporting decreases. Quebec reported the biggest decline, however remained above pre-COVID-19 ranges on this part.

Nationally, the institutional part declined 3.7%, regardless of beneficial properties in 5 provinces.

Slight enhance in residential development funding

Total, funding in residential development was up 1.6%, led by multi-unit investments. Multi-unit development rose for the fifth consecutive month with beneficial properties in seven provinces. Manitoba and Quebec led the advance with each new development and renovation tasks on residence buildings. The biggest declines had been reported in British Columbia (-4.1%), persevering with a downward development following the height reached in Could 2019. 

Single unit funding in constructing development was largely unchanged in September (-0.6%) after 4 consecutive month-to-month will increase from Could via August. Declines reported in 5 provinces had been principally offset by beneficial properties in Newfoundland and Labrador (+8.5%), New Brunswick (+5.8%), British Columbia (+1.8%) and Ontario (+0.2%).
