A clean exterior does not always confirm reliable performance, and a low-hour unit is not always the best option if maintenance records, load testing or documentation are missing. Before buying, the goal is to understand how the generator was used, how it was maintained, what condition it is in today and whether it fits your actual power requirement.

1. Confirm the Generator Rating and Application

Start by confirming the generator’s rated capacity and intended application. A generator may be rated for standby, prime or continuous operation. These ratings are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong rating can lead to overload, poor performance or premature wear.
