The goal is to understand how it was used, how it was maintained, what condition it is in today and whether it fits your specific power requirement.

1. Confirm the Generator Rating and Application

The first step is to confirm the generator’s rated output and intended use. A generator can be designed for standby power, prime power or continuous duty. These ratings are not the same, and buying the wrong type of unit can lead to overload, premature wear or operational limitations.

  • Inspect the generator end for signs of overheating, contamination or moisture.

Buyer Note: A Visual Inspection Is Not Enough

A generator can look clean and still have electrical, cooling, fuel or control issues. Whenever possible, request a functional test, load test or technical inspection before finalizing the purchase. 5. Ask for a Load Test or Operating Demonstration

A load test helps confirm whether the generator can perform under demand. It also helps reveal problems that may not appear when the unit is running with no load. During testing, the unit should be monitored for voltage stability, frequency, temperature, smoke, vibration and alarms.

If a full load bank test is not available, at minimum, request an operating demonstration and detailed video showing startup, panel readings, engine response and shutdown.
